I’ve always enjoyed going to see movies, but when I moved to Boston 11 years ago I became obsessed with film, largely due to the Brattle. †The Brattle is an independent movie theatre that shows old movies as well as independent and foreign films. †Once I saw Welles, Hitchcock, Kubrick, Kurosawa and the like on the big screen it became a major influence on my art. †I even contemplated doing a double major of film and photography at art school, but in the end I chose to focus on the latter so that I could get some sleep once in a while. †Both majors were demanding enough on their own.

So what does the previous long-winded paragraph have to do with the image above? † The Longy School of Music is hosting a silent art auction to benefit the Brattle on Sunday, September 28. †Two of my photographs were accepted to be in the auction, and I’m happy to give back to such an important institution. †More information is here. †These are the two photographs that are being auctioned:

Duomo was taken in Sienna, Italy. It is a 20″x30″ print.

517 was taken on a trip to Philadelphia. It is an 11″x14″ print.

Come see a ton of art! Come eat a ton of food!

Somerville Open Studios

My studio is at 86 Joy St, studio 4. Since it’s a little out of the way (#20 on the SOS map), there will be shuttles from Joy Street to other areas of Somerville.

I’m still figuring out what I’ll be hanging, but the following images are already framed and on the wall. I’m a bit all over the place in terms of artwork. I love all aspects of photography, so I have a bunch of different projects going on at any given time. I’ll be showing some film work, some digital, some Polaroids (including rare 20×24 Polaroid images that I almost never show), and whatever else I have time to prepare. I have large-format color urban landscapes at night, portraits, documentary travel work, etc.

I know, a flower picture. There’s something about this one that doesn’t feel cheesy to me, though. I printed it huge (I think 30×40).

These next few are from Italy. Florence, to be precise.

This one is one of my all-time favorite pictures I’ve ever taken. It’s one of those times where I got the perfect split-second where everything is perfectly placed in the frame. My photo hero Cartier-Bresson calls it the “Decisive Moment.”

Here are 2 of my Holga pictures. I’m showing 5. I still love using film and printing in a darkroom.
